Opernhaus Düsseldorf

The Düsseldorf Opera House on Heinrich-Heine-Allee is located on the edge of the old town, directly between Hofgarten and Königsallee, and is within walking distance of the Rhine promenade.

In 1875, the new city theater was opened according to plans by the architect Ernst Giese. The building, modeled on the Italian Renaissance style with its round front building and 1,260 seats, was similar to other representative theater buildings such as the Semperoper in Dresden.

The theater was badly damaged by two air raids in 1943. After the war, a period of temporary construction followed until the opera house received its current appearance in the mid-1950s. Extensive reconstruction measures based on plans by the architects Julius Schulte Frohlinde, Paul Bonatz and Ernst Huhn were intended to correct the hasty repairs of the war and redefine the appearance of the opera house. The front building with its simple facade, the beautifully curved staircases of the foyer and numerous stylistic elements of the 1950s is now a listed building.

Between 2006 and 2007, the city of Düsseldorf commissioned extensive renovation of the opera house. The house was visibly expanded with a light-flooded orchestra and ballet rehearsal hall. It opens onto the Hofgarten and Königsallee with a ten-meter-wide, eight-meter-high glass facade. The hall can now accommodate a maximum of 1,296 visitors. The basement area below houses the collection of around 50,000 costumes - an attraction on every tour of the opera house.

Accessibility

The Düsseldorf Opera House is a historic building with limited accessibility. Since the inclusion of all visitors is important to us, we strive to create the best possible access for everyone.

Our staff in the opera shop and the service staff in the opera house will be happy to answer any questions you may have regarding access to our venues.

We would be pleased if you could give us valuable suggestions based on your experiences on how we can improve:

Discounts
Severely disabled people with a GdB of 70 or more and one accompanying person (provided the letter B is noted on the severely disabled person's ID card) receive a discount of around 50% on the single ticket price.

Parking spaces for people with disabilities
Public parking spaces for people with disabilities are located on Ludwig-Zimmermann-Straße, right next to the opera house.

Access for visitors with reduced mobility
The opera house is step-free.

The elevator (dimensions: 0.8 x 1.4 meters) on the right side of the building takes you to all floors. Please note that there is only one elevator and plan enough time if you need to use it.

All stairs in the foyer have handrails.

Due to historical structural conditions, the auditorium has steps in both the stalls and the tiers that must be negotiated without a railing. The steps in the stalls are wide and low, while the gradient in the tiers is higher (1st tier 8%, 2nd tier 9.5%, 3rd tier 11%).

Unfortunately, rollators are not allowed into the hall due to fire safety regulations. Our staff will be happy to store them in front of the hall doors, help you to your seat if you wish, and have your rollator ready for you during the interval or after the performance.

Disabled-accessible toilets
A disabled-accessible toilet is located on the lowest level in the cloakroom foyer.

Seats for wheelchair users and companions
There are two wheelchair seats on the left and right side of row 14 in the stalls. To prevent these seats from being accidentally booked by non-wheelchair users, they cannot be booked online, but only by phone or directly in the opera shop.

Seating recommendation for visitors with limited mobility
For visitors with limited mobility, all seats at the edge of the stalls are easily accessible and are therefore our booking recommendation.

For those with hearing impairments
The Düsseldorf Opera House has an inductive hearing system in the stalls and in the second tier, which provides wearers of hearing aids with a T-coil or cochlear implant with an improved sound experience. You can use this if you set your hearing aid to "T" (telephone).

Performances with audio description
The Ballett am Rhein offers selected dates for each production with audio description for blind and visually impaired visitors. You can find further information here.

Assistance dogs
Assistance dogs are permitted with prior registration. In order to provide you with suitable seats, please book by phone or directly in the opera shop and discuss your request with our staff.

Eating & drinking during the break
Our catering counters can be found in the stalls and first-tier foyer. They are accessible without any thresholds via the elevator.
